What is counted
In supported browsers, characters are counted as user-perceived grapheme clusters, so an emoji or a letter with combining marks usually counts as one. The count without whitespace skips whitespace graphemes in the original text without merging the graphemes on either side. Lines follow line breaks. Visually blank lines, including lines that contain only whitespace, separate paragraphs.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Browsers with Intl.Segmenter use the current page language for word boundaries and count word-like segments. Other browsers show an approximate count.
Do emoji count as characters?
In supported browsers, an emoji or combined character that appears as one character is counted once.
